Chocolate Cake Box Mix Review

Hello Everybody!
This week's blog post is a little different as it's a review! The product I was reviewing is a chocolate cake box mix and it's by the brand 'Renata'. The main language on the packet is Portuguese but fortunately for me there is also English ( and Spanish!).
So let's get started...

  First thing's first, here's everything you'll need:
  • A packet of the cake mix ( no surprise)
  • 3 eggs
  • 150ml of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of margarine
  • a lined cake pan, mine is 8inches
  • KitchenAid/ mixer
  • a tablespoon
  • an extra spoon
As stated the back of the packet says to use margarine. I was quite sceptical about this as I always use butter when baking and I'm very aware of how less flavoursome baking with margarine is. However I decided as it says margarine I'll use it. If I was making this again (and I have a few packets so it's very likely that I will) I would definitely use butter. The finished cake was a bit lacking in flavour because of the margarine but if you keep reading you'll see my solution to this problem.

As this is a box mix it was pretty straight-forward to make. Don't forget to preheat your oven to 180degrees/ gas mark 4. Now you can put all of your ingredients into a bowl and mix!

Unmixed ingredients...
...mixed ingredients!
After all the ingredients are incorporated simply pour the mixture into your pan and bake for about 40-45 mins.

Before going into the oven...
...after 43 mins
I decided to whip up some chocolate frosting to take this chocolate cake to the next level!

To make the frosting you'll need:
  • KitchenAid/ mixer
  • weighing scales
  • a spoon
Ingredients wise you'll need:
  • 300g icing sugar
  • 100g butter
  • 40g cocoa powder
  • 40ml milk

The process for making the icing is also quite simple, put all of your ingredients into you mixer and mix until you have a smooth icing.
Warning: slightly unattractive picture!
After making the icing, I cut my cake into two pieces so I could put some icing into the centre.
and voilĂ :

You're finished!

Buutt you may find that you have some leftover icing, which I smothered all over the top of the cake.

In conclusion this was a nice cake mix but I would highly recommend replacing the margarine with butter. I also think the icing is a nice touch as it makes the cake more moist and delicious!

I hope you enjoyed and I'll see you next time :)
